Final Capstone Project

Our final capstone project was for the Humane Society of Utah (HSU). We built our training using Wix.com and Powtoon. We chose these tools because they enabled our team to quickly create an immersive and detailed learning system. But also because information changes often at the HSU, which needs to be updated regularly. So, we chose these platforms because they helped up fulfill our goal to make it fast and easy to hand off to our client, who wouldn’t have to learn how to use—or purchase—an additional tool. Our stakeholder already knows how to use Wix and Powtoon and has her own accounts, so it was a no-brainer.

Our project is comprised of three modules, each with their own set of objectives. HSU 101 covers a lot of the information that volunteers need to know. Customer Service 101 provides tips and resources for customer service. Bite Prevention 101 provides techniques for handling and assessing cat and dog behavior, preventing bites and scratches while on the job. Each of these modules are titled with ‘101’ because our training is an introduction to the volunteer training program. Volunteers and staff members will go through further, additional training at the HSU, so our system is a dip your toes in it, feel less overwhelmed on your first day, accessible resources, type of training.

pick your path in the park

In order support learning through androgyny, we gave learners the option to pick their own path in the park. The park is just one way learners could be empowered and self-pace learn. We also added a navigation bar at the top of the website, so learners could still navigate easily throughout the three modules.

Videos

We produced 9 videos, each about 2-4 minutes long. We needed to distill information quickly and in engaging ways, so we utilized multi-media techniques. We were also able to use audio, visuals, and strategic on-screen text to help learners with a range of learning preferences.

Knowledge checks

There is no rigorous testing or harsh grading that will prevent them from becoming a volunteer. This training is meant to be resourceful. So, we created low-stakes knowledge checks throughout each module. Each question provides specific answer feedback, whether or not they answered right or wrong.
